Pretend Play Store can be a hub of fun activity and learning. Children love shopping, and love to imitate what parents do. Since parents shop a lot, in a child's mind, it is a very important activity. Now it's possible to buy for your child a pretend shop. There is quite a variety, and some are surprisingly inexpensive. The stores range from a simple lemonade stand, to larger fruit stands, all the way to a Market Stand by Marvel that has shelves for all kinds of products, and has it all organized as well as any real store.
Ultimately, by emulating parents, kids learn how to function in the real world. Having fun at the pretend play store is also a wonderful excuse to introduce kids to all kinds of knowledge - from simple color recognition, naming products, to basic arithmetic (counting, addition), to packing, stacking, and organizing things, to basics of nutrition and money management. The beauty of a pretend play store is that it "grows" with a child. As kids get older and know more, the lessons can become more sophisticated and cover a wider range of subjects.
Melissa Doug
I am not exaggerating when talking about the pretend play store allowing for ever more sophisticated lessons. As kids grown older and their knowledge grows, there really is no limit to the learning games that can be played with a pretend store. Even a simple fruit stand can be used to provide fascinating lessons. Parents could even teach about international shipping and economic interdependence, and currency exchange rates if they so desired. Tracking the route of something as simple as bananas, from a plantation in Chile, to a local store in the US (or your child's pretend play store) would provide a fascinating glimpse of the modern economy.
Parents could discuss logistics - trucking, railways, ocean shipping lines. Grownups could also discuss currency exchange rates and the impact of their changes on manufacturers, shippers, and retailers. Or instead of international aspects, parents could talk about entrepreneurship and starting one's own real fruit stand. Naturally this level of learning would be reserved for much older children. To keep themselves interested, parents could pick products or subjects they like and know about, then trace their route through the world. This is just an example of how versatile a pretend play shop can be. In the end though, grownups need to remember that first and foremost, pretend play store is a toy. While the lessons can be important and useful, they should never overshadow the primary purpose of the store - to be a fun toy.
