Kids and toys are inseparable. No matter where you go, all children of different ages are bewildered by toys. But along with this fascination for different kinds of toys, we might be endangering our own children. Hundreds of children worldwide succumb to different toy-related accidents. It's a very sad truth. But we are not to be left without a lesson. Parents nowadays should know better when choosing toys for their young ones. I will list some tips on how to choose a safe toy for your child. They will be categorized by age groups because they will have different needs.
3 Years Old and Below

- Make sure you buy toys that do not include small parts that may be swallowed by the child. Children below 3 like to put things in their mouths so you must always keep a close watch when they play.
- Make sure burst balloons are out of reach of children in this age group. They may swallow the broken balloon and choke.
- Balls, marbles and other round objects with a diameter of 1.75 inches should be avoided. They may easily be swallowed.
- Children below 3 usually twist, pull and prod their toys. Make sure the toys you buy are of high quality and have no parts that might be accidentally dismembered by the child.
3 - 5 Years Old
- Toys with sharp edges or points are highly discouraged.
- Check the toy before purchase. Make sure they are not made out of brittle plastic that may chip or break and create sharp edges.
- When looking for coloring materials, make sure the mark "ASTM D-4236" is present in the product. This basically means that the material has been thoroughly checked for poisons and has passed the safety measures.
6 - 12 Years Old
- Make sure you instruct the older kids to keep their own toys away from their little brothers and sisters at all times.
- Sometimes, children in this age group especially the boys tend to like toy guns. Make sure that the toy can easily be distinguished. Bright colorings on the toy guns are examples.
For all ages
- Personally check the toys for damages. After the kids play with the toys, do a quick check to see if some parts have not broken off creating sharp edges or the paint hasn't peeled off. Broken toys should be repaired or replaced right away to avoid accidents.
- Tell your kids never to put the toys inside their mouths. This is extremely hard for infants so you must keep a close watch to make sure.
- Keep yourself up-to-date with toy recalls.
- Teach your kids to arrange their toys after playtime. This is to prevent them or another member of the family from tripping on them.
- Be careful of toys that produce loud noises. This can result in hearing defects. If your kids already have toys that make sounds, make sure you instruct them not to put them near their ears at all times to prevent stress to the ears.
